Southwest Gas Recognizes National 811 Day

August 10, 2016

Thursday, August 11, is National 811 Day, the perfect time for Southwest Gas to remind everyone, including homeowners, to call 811 before starting any digging project – even small projects like planting trees or shrubs.

Our first priority is to keep the public safe, and August 11 provides a great reminder to our communities about the importance of calling the 811 Call Before You Dig service. In many communities, utility lines for cable TV, high-speed internet, natural gas, water, and sewer are buried underground. Striking one of these lines can result in inconvenient outages for entire neighborhoods, harm to yourself or someone else, and costly repairs.

Unfortunately, every six minutes an underground utility line is damaged because someone decided to dig without first calling 811, and improper excavation remains the number one cause of accidents involving pipelines. Making one call to 811 at least two business days before beginning a project gets utility-owned underground lines marked for free.

Visit our website at www.swgas.com/safety to access important safety information and videos about preventing damage to natural gas lines. Southwest Gas provides natural gas service to more than 1.9 million customers in Arizona, California and Nevada.
